Judges Lodgings This is Lancaster's oldest town house and was built in 1625. It was the home of Thomas Covell, Mayor of Lancaster six times and the Keeper of Lancaster Castle in the 17th century. Covell is most famous for his dark vocation of witch-hunter. It was he who imprisoned and put to death the Lancashire Witches in 1612.

From 1826 until 1975, the building became the Judges Lodgings, used as the residence of visiting Assize Judges. Now it is open to the public as home to two museums. One of these is the Gillow Museum, housing displays of the furniture manufacturers, Gillows. The other is the nationally acclaimed Museum of Childhood, with a reconstructed classroom, where today's children (and their parents) can experience a very different kind of education and discipline to that of today.
