The Ashton Memorial is a beautiful Edwardian folly, which dominates the skyline of Lancaster and can be easily spotted from the M6 motorway. It is located in Williamson Park, named after its creator, James Williamson. Williamson's son, Lord Ashton, built the memorial in memory of his first wife and presented it to the City of Lancaster, as a gift.These days, the Ashton memorial hosts an Art Gallery and is often used for wedding ceremonies. Each year, the park is the setting for open air theatre and the Ashton Memorial can become anything from Toad's Hall to Juliet's balcony, as the need arises. Williamson Park is beautiful. 54 acres of landscaped parkland with paths, a lake, play areas, an orienteering course, tea rooms, a Butterfly House, Mini Beast, Small Mammal and Bird Enclosure and, of course, a gift shop.
